Medifast - Weight Loss Program Review from San Diego, California

Of course you'll lose weight with a super low calorie intake. Still, it was only .5 -1 lbs per week, usually on the low end, not what ads lead you to believe. I followed plan exactly. Within a few weeks I developed a B vitamin deficiency, my hair was dull, & I felt fatigued. Food is highly processed, loaded with preservatives & fake nutrition. I lost weight but gained it all back when I resumed eating even small amounts of real food. Bob Harper's The Skinny Rules is way more effective & healthier. Medifast sucks.

Medifast Weight Loss Program Review

I had a consult for information to lose 50 pounds. The cost was too much. Plus almost $100 per week for food. I don't spend that much now. I'll have my doctor right a consult with a Nutritionist, where my insurance will pay, and I can eat real food. I'll be saving thousands of dollars over 2 years!

HYPOTHYRODISM - BEWARE OF MEDIFAST

Medifast meals are mostly soy. Two medical facts: Eating a lot of soy can give hypothyroidism/low thyroid function.

If you already take thyroid supplements for hypothyroidism, soy blocks absorption of the medication. I take thyroid meds. After being on the Medifast diet for five weeks my energy bottomed out, I felt bone tired and my hair fell out in handfuls. My coach originally told me not to eat soy within two hours of taking the meds.

Now I know medical research states no soy within four hours of taking thyroid medication, though the diet demands that you eat every two hours without fail to maintain blood sugar levels and regulate your metabolism.

I will never eat soy products again knowing what I know now.

So BEWARE OF MEDIFAST if you have low thyroid function. There are many other successful ways to lose weight.

I have hypothyroidism. When I purchased a month of medifast (now Optavia) , I didn’t realize that most of the products were soy based.

I waited for the burst of energy that everyone talks about. It never came. I needed a nap almost every day. And without being too graphic, my bowels were a mess.

I called Optavia and they told me to stop eating the bars. They said that if there was another ingredient that was bothering me, it would be difficult to isolate it. For now, I’ve stopped eating all of the products to let my gut settle down.

I may finish what I have as a snack now and then. But I’m not going to go back to 5 a day.

I also take thyroid meds and had a very similar experience with Medifast. I lost 60 pounds in seven months but had to increase my thyroid dosage twice.

I ate the Medifast food close to my thyroid meds maybe 10% of the time but otherwise over four hours away from them. After seven months of Medifast, I felt slow. I couldn’t go number 2 without Ducolax and enemas. It might sound TMI, but Senna and Miralax were not sufficient over time.

I started cheating some but absolutely stayed under an average 1100 per day; it was hard to be a perfect Medifast eater for so long. In the next three years, off plan, I regained all 60 pounds and added about 17 extra.

Extremely helpful until after they get their money

Medifast does not work. They hire already fit, skinny people to sell, sell, sell and not relent until they sell you on a $1000.00 packet. You are their number one priority, they are super friendly until you give them money; then you are just a number and when you go in to be weighed and for "consult" all they do is consult you on what you are going to purchase next. They give you 3 days to cancel for a refund after you purchase, I went in to get a refund and they did a HUGE, all hands on deck, sales pitch. The head sales person even told me she would personally help me with my goals....I never talked to her again during the 3 months I was with the program. The food is absolutely gross, processed and I'm not convinced its real food. I only lost 6 lbs but mostly it was because I skipped meals since the food is terrible. I would not recommend Medifast. You are better off spending the $1000 on a tread climber or a good bicycle; even a personal trainer would be better than this program.

In six months, I lost 60 pounds with Medifast. Two years later, I have gained back all the weight and more.

I followed the program quite closely for those six months, and it had its pros and cons. Previously, I had been diagnosed with PCOS. In my 30's, after doing Medifast, still, my cycle has been more regular than it had ever been since I was 11. So, I do believe that a low-carb program for awhile may actually be quite helpful in correcting PCOS.

Also, for months I did actually feel like hunger was better controlled on Medifast than other low calorie/high protein diets with more calories had done for me. The problem is, after six months, my metabolism drastically dropped, which I think is unhealthy. Even though I almost always ate the soy products at least 4 hours after my thyroid medication, my need for thyroid medication doubled during the time period of the diet. Also, my iron levels dropped from what I think were finally normal to low again.

I felt very fatigued and sluggish after six months, and occasionally dizzy, despite daily Poweraid zero. My pharmacist said that even though the diet is supplemented, supplements should be taken during the diet since so low calories make it harder to absorb nutrients. I've read that carbohydrates can aid with muscle recovery and actually help thyroid function. Also, after five months on Medifast, I started having extreme constipation problems.

I believe Medifast contributed to depression problems too, even though I was actually happier sometimes a few mon. after starting Medifast. After six months though, I felt lighter, but sicker, and I think my blood pressure of 90/60 was unnatural for me and not completely healthy.

Not being a doctor but having read extensively and having been there, I would still recommend Medifast sometimes, but maybe only for four months or so to be followed by gradual increase of carb intake. Again, Medifast has pros and cons.

I agree, the mac and cheese was the worst thing I've ever put in my mouth. They need to delete that product

You forget to mention the Medifast Mac and Cheese prepared is about one tablespoon worth! Oh yummy yummy yummy!

I calculated at this price a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese would produce about $75 worth of Medifast Mac and Cheese. About the same charge as the Mac and Cheese and TRUFFLES from Maximines in Paris.

MediFast caused endocrine problems

I lost about 30 pounds on medifast in about 5 months. I told the people at medifast that I was loosing weight because my husband and I were going to start trying to have a baby. When I first started loosing weight my cycle changed and I started loosing hair. After I stopped medifast we started trying and nothing month after month. I went to my doctor and was diagnosed with PCOS. I consulted with another physician who tested my cortisol levels and my adrenal gland function which was horrible. Medifast foods contain high amounts of soy protein. Soy is thought to lead to infertility. My physician has told me to eat as little soy as possible. I really feel that this diet jump started my endocrine problems. I would not recommend it to anyone at all. Don't do it!!!! look up the side affects of soy and listen to peoples' reviews. The food isn't very good, It gave me horrible gas and the health issues are not worth the weight loss. don't do it!

It's more like a religion, really. The health coaches add you to a facebook group that they post to frequently with near evangelistic fervor.

"How wonderful our program is! - a MIRACLE! I feel so much BETTER! You can do it, just have FAITH!!

Dr. A is a genius! Our savior!" What BS. They get good natured but clueless people worked up into a lather, and keep bringing in the cash from these poor folks.

Almost all the weight loss they experience will return once they stop eating the fake food Medifast sells them. All they really need to do is follow a much simpler diet, eat smaller portions, more frequently and exercise more. I dropped Medifast and went on Atkins, and lost 90 pounds, dropped my cholesterol 30 points, my blood pressure 15 points and my triglycerides by 50%.

Total cost: 5 bucks for a copy of Dr. Atkins book at the used book store.

I was thinking about doing MediFast. I am glad I didn't waste my money after reading all the reviews.

Soy is very bad for your health. Also, just by looking at the pictures on the website, I just couldn't bring myself to make the purchase. The food doesn't look very appetizing at all. I know that I wouldn't eat it once it was delivered to me.

A health coach keeps calling me to try to get me started. She seems like a nice lady but I guess I will find a different way to lose weight. I was on another website and there were a lot of negative reviews. People were losing their hair and getting terrible gas and bloating.

Who needs that!

In my opinion, it doesn't look like a good idea.

More concerned with their stats and calculations than helping me!

I signed up for the local center... and it cost me more than $1400 for the services, not including food... (they REQUIRE you to pay for a full year of support, in addition to the weight loss, which I found to be totally predatory, before you even try the weekly weight loss and service). I lost weight during the first three months, then fell off the VERY strict diet... and all the lecturing I got from the center totally demotivated me. I tried three times to go back and get back on track, because i had paid for more than a year of remaining support... and they were more concerned with recalculating to see if I can still "hit" their projections, then actually helping me. i was so disillusioned, I stopped going. We are PEOPLE... not just a scientific calculation. Had you actually paid attention to my concerns, and not your calculator, I might have continued going.

I have wondered why people are always talking about losing so much money with this program. I didn't go to a center or use a health coach.

I ordered 4 weeks of food off the Medifast website and then immediately canceled my account once the order was processed so I wouldn't get roped into any more deliveries like I did with Nutrisystem. I lost almost 20 pounds over those 4 weeks. Mostly water weight the first week with the biggest loss of 10 pounds. I had horrible headaches and no energy, but it got better after that first week.

I was turned off by the soy and other ingredients. 100 calories for fake eggs when a real one is only 70?

I had no idea that the centers were charging these kinds of fees. Unreal!

And it doesn't include the cost of food?

I just started eating real, unprocessed food and kept it at 1,200 calories and lost another 10. Never again with fake foods!

The Take Shape For Life my Medifast program is just as bad - it's an aggressive multi level marketing scheme designed to make LOTS of money for the so-called 'health coaches' who attempt to trick you into becoming a health coach as well. Classic ponzi scheme.

NONE Of the health coaches I have met have any formal education in medicine, health, nutrition, chemistry, science, or any other health related academic area. These people also make wildly silly rules for the 'lean and green' meals - no more than 3 grams of 'condiments' per day, and no differentiation between carbs from fiber (non nutritive carbohydrate like cellulose) and starchy carbohydrates like white flour or sugar. Insane. They seem to follow decodes old recommendations that have been long debunked and they refuse to update their program to reflect solid research on nutrition.

The worst part of this company is the customer service. They treat you like a criminal if you decide to return something, with draconian rules that strictly limit any notion of 'customer satisfaction'. The autoship option they want you to follow will ship you the same order over and over unless you cancel the program. If you cancel, you are charges INCREDIBLY huge shipping charges for very lightweight bags of dehydrated food.

And, overall, they are sticking to the same old 'standard american diet' model that has been thoroughly debunked and vilified by countless serious researchers. If you dare question their 'nutritional support people' they will refer your comment to one 'dietician' who appears to have a degree, but no one really knows for sure. The whole program is suspect and one should be very careful and read their policies VERY closely before trusting this bunch. The Better Business Bureau has well over 50 complaints about the business practices of this company as well.

I lost a little weight on the program, but the business practices are unacceptable and potentially legally actionable.

There are alternatives - google for them. Free shipping, almost exact same food choices, MUCH better flavor and a 110% satisfaction guarantee with NO multi level marketing BS to deal with.

Medifast - Dietary Supplement Review from Boston, Massachusetts

Just found out I was charged 50 dollars for what is known as metifast. I actually had to look it up on google because I didn't know what it was. Come to find out IRS a dietary supplement. I am 109 PDS. I don't need any help losing weight. I never received any pills which is why I didn't know what it was I also have not received any re-compensation atall and customer service is awful. They sshowed me receipt for purchase when I never purchased anything! I never got it!!! I am ticked because its not a 12 dollar bottle of pills and they are not talking any action to help my problem . I thoughtd they at least ask me if I would like a shipment instead making me feel like I'm lying? I want my money back please :( that's gas money dude.

Medifast

I went to a Medifast center near my house. After they went through their sales pitch, they wanted to charge me $1100 for "support", not including the food. When I declined, they didn't have much time for me. I ended up buying a month's worth of their food. Much too expensive for what you get. After a week,I couldn't stomach it anymore. It was making me physically sick. I took five full unopened boxes back to the center. The website says they will give you a refund. The center told me that I would have had to order them through the website. I told her that I had bought them there and should be able to return them there. She said no, that is not their policy. Buyer beware!!! I ended up giving most of it away and threw the rest.

A terrible, terrible company! I wish I could find a lawyer willing to start a class action against this organization!

I had to threaten them with a lawsuit to get my money back! And my credit card company warned me that they have received a LOT of complaints about fraudulent business practices.

DO you research - check the Better Business Bureau before you give them a dime.

Medifast oatmeal package short one pack per box

I ordered two Medifast oatmeal boxes. On the box it states that box contains seven envelopes but in instead I got six envelopes. I ordered two boxes. I know it's only two envelopes but Medifast is soo expensive that I want what I paid for. So I sent an email complaint a week ago asking for my two envelopes and got an automated response that I will receive an answer in two days. That came and went. I sent a second email this time saying give me my two envelopes or I want a full refund. We'll see if they even answer.

No, they will NOT send you a replacement! They will draw things out until their 'time limit' for refunds hits, then you are screwed.

Next time, order with American Express. They have very strict guarantees for service for their merchants. One complaint to AMEX and bingo, you get your refund from AMEX, and AMEX deducts that amount from any payments due Medifast.

Done. Common Sense does NOT apply with companies like this!

Are you kidding? Call the company and ask for a replacement theyll send you a box for free. Seriously use common sense.

Medifast Center fee a rip off

I paid over $900.00 to a local medifast center because they 1. Had a really knowledgeable lady at the front deck who signed me up saying I would geta. weekly weigh inb. session with a person who was a personal trainer and educated in healthy eatting.so I signed up and in just a few weeks the lady was gone and the center manager (who was nice but had no experience or knowledge in weight loss) wanted to weigh me in and have the session with me. I refused and made an appt for the following week. After that I told them I only wanted to deal with the experienced person. Following week same thing I was to be weighed in by the manager and so I walked out. I then called the customer service center and was given the phone number of the district manager and I left her a message of my concerns and asked for her to call me. No one from medifast has ever called. The hardest thing for me is that I feel uncomfortable going to a center as an over weight women and they only employ men. I am not getting the food on line and so far so good. I just feel I was cheated out of my good hard earned money and the lack of concern by medifast is so wrong.

I realized early on that I was not going to go to the centers for the service. I did all my food orders and joined the online community for support.

I felt that going into a "center" weekly to be weighted was not conducive to my hectic schedule and quite frankly, I could do it myself. I bought a really good scale and weighted myself every week. I am not certain if there is an additional cost to visit the centers for that service, but felt like I had tremendous support and information available to me online - the community is basically like minded individuals who want to change their life habits with eating and others who are on the program. I developed lasting relationships and have a huge support system from others who are doing the program also.

Plus, I had the option to email questions and concerns to a nutritionist/specialist online also. I never, ever got a sales pitch or ever felt like I was pressured into buying, buying, buying. I lost 40+lbs the first time I did the program and kept it off for over 2 years. I didn't have any negative health effects from doing the program, but I did consult with my personal physician during the 3.5 months I was on the program.

All my blood work actually came back better, but that is me.

I just wanted to put it out there. The only "complaint" I have, which is like many others - the food is expensive but my overall experience was and has been fairly positive.

My experience with medifast in Clearwater FL has been the worst business interaction I ever had. I recently paid in full $688.94 for my weight-loss program, 4 days later my doctor called and gave me news that would prevent me from completing the program.

When I spoke with the manager she just told me the company policy that I needed a doctor’s note; she was very cold and not compassionate at all. I got the note and gave it to her on 02/22/14 and she said it was not signed so corporate office would not approve my request for a refund.

When I asked her for a number or address to corporate office she stated she did not know the information or who she would direct me too. I am a single mother who makes a modest living serving our nations veterans and also army reservist with multiple deployments serving my country. Now I face a more difficult battle with my health and have to also fight to get a partial refund.

Can someone in corporate help me? The medifast in Clearwater FL location, management in particular Angela is not being helpful and is a terrible representative of the Medifast Corporation.

Why do you have an anorexic who has never been overweight working at medifast? Why do you recommed someone call her to resolve a problem when she can obviously not relate to ever having a real weight issue.

Not buying all the complaints

I was on the medifast diet for 5 weeks and lost 29 pounds. I never got sick... BUT, to the people that did, maybe you should have the weight loss monitored by your physician. The first couple of weeks is a shock to the body because you're going down to a 1200 calorie diet and down to less than 100 carbs a day. You will feel sick, nauseous and dizzy. The severe drop in carbs can be a real problem for diabetics even if you're borderlining. If you're losing your hair then maybe you should consider a vitamin a day or two. Bottom line, being over-weight is tasking on our bodies. I would be shocked if you didn't have some type of side effect when switching to this diet. On the bright side... if you stick it out... eating fast food and some foods you ate prior to the diet will make you feel sick, nauseous and dizzy. This I can promise you!

It's quack medicine, really. Low fat AND low carb is insanely dangerous for so many reasons.

They LOVE to crow about this diet being developed at Johns Hopkins University - THIRTY YEARS AGO, and by god, they use thirty year old theory to prop up their foolish diet.

Even Pritikin was forced to add back healthy fats to their fad diet year ago after patients started having stokes, increased heart disease, massive hair loss and liver failure. Best advice: find a GOOD doctor that is up to date with nutritional research, not some half-wit repeating old dogma like a mynah bird.

It's not LOW fat you ***. It's an easy to manage ketosis diet.

Ketosis is a low carb, moderate fat, high protein diet which is what Medifast is. Even their snacks and meals are fortified with extra protein.

I don't know if your mother told you what assuming does, but next time you want to act like you know what you're talking about you should probably take 5 minutes and Google it to find out if it's true. P.S., Everyone you know secretly hates you because you act like you know something when you don't.

Guest

Original Poster - you hit it right on the head!! I believe most of the complaints are from some who really are not ready to commit to the program and decided not to consult with their physician before doing the program.

Also, going to the Clinic's is a waste of money. If you are serious about weight loss, willing to spend the money for the food, then commit to it and join the online community for support and weigh yourself. It truly isn't rocket science.

I realized early on that I was not going to go to the centers for the service. I did all my food orders online and joined the online community for support.

I felt that going into a "center" weekly to be weighted was not conducive to my hectic schedule and quite frankly, I could do it myself. Basically, I was committed to losing the weight and knew it wasn't going to be easy.

I bought a really good scale and weighted myself every week. I had tremendous support and information available to me online - the community is basically like minded individuals who want to change their life habits with eating and others who are on the program and support each other thru difficult days, side effects etc.

I developed lasting relationships in the community and have a huge support system from others who are doing the program also.

Plus, I had the option to email questions and concerns to a nutritionist/specialist online also. I never, ever got a sales pitch or ever felt like I was pressured into buying, buying, buying because I managed my program myself online. Didn't see the point in paying someone else to weigh me or offer support when I could get it for free. The program is simple, eat the food, follow the rules and stick with it.

Do the research for yourself and you don't need to talk to a clinic rep. for nutritional help, cause you only get one meal a day and if you read the material sent with your order you can figure it out yourself or go online to the medifast online community (its free to join) and there are TONS of meals and recipes you can use.

I lost 40+lbs the first time I did the program and kept it off for over 2+ years. I didn't have any negative health effects from doing the program, but I did consult with my personal physician during the 3.5 months I was on the program. All my blood work actually came back better, but that is me.

I just wanted to put it out there. There are people who have allergies to soy, so you should check with your doctor first before using the program.

I too never got sick from eating the food, though I will say the first 3 days were a little difficult. Some of the food I was thinking that I couldn't eat, but the online support community let me know I wasn't alone in that thinking and told me to put that particular food item aside and eat one of the other food items I liked.

Eventually, I came back around about a week later and tried the oatmeal again and it actually didn't taste as yucky as I thought. I wasn't dizzy or suffered from nausea and only real side effect for me was headache on day 2 and 3, but I suspect that was from no caffeine. Any mental side effect were from having to re-learn to eat when I am hungry and basically be conscience of what I was actually eating. Healthier food choices that didn't include fast food or processed foods full of corn syrup and preservatives or artificial sweeteners.

I was basically forcing my body to learn to deal with no sugars, no processed food, no breads, rice or any other carbs. Eventually, for me at least, by day 4 - I wasn't craving sweets nor carbs and basically felt better and had energy and wasn't hungry. I agree with Scout that eating healthier, exercise are the key to better health and weigh loss - however, most people have no earthly idea what healthier eating is. They think eating fat free is how you lose weight - and buying frozen dinners with low fat, fat free labeled all over the packaging.

Any layman will think, well its fat free/low calorie and they eat bigger portions. They don't drink 8+oz of water a day, they don't know proper portions, they don't read labels, they consume sugar in EVERYTHING that is processed food and honestly, if they can't commit to the program then they certainly won't commit to a healthier lifestyle. In all fairness, the program will teach you portion control by weighing and measuring your food (if only to learn how to eyeball what 4 oz of lean meat looks like, or what 1 cup of lettuce actually looks like)It will teach you to plan your meals and most of all it will in the end teach you to only eat when you are hungry and most of all - you will learn discipline and self control. Last but not least...if you are looking for a magic pill to make you lose weight and you are not willing to put the time and energy into it and commit to it - then you have already set yourself up to fail with the program.

Speaking from experience, I have no one to blame for being overweight but myself and no one but ME can lose the weight - so blaming the program or some stranger at a Clinic for my failure to do it is just plain sad. Just my two cents.

Guest

Gotta agree with Scout.

No safe healthy diet should make you feel sick (unless youare allergic to the foods) or make you lose your hair. Medifast sounds frightening. The right way to lose weight and stay healthy is exercise, eat healthy foods and get plenty of sleep and stay away from scams like Medifast.

LIED, said they didn't receive my returned items, so no refund

I contacted Medifast to return items bought, received return ID# and shipped it off as instructed. I put the return form with my return ID# in the box, and marked the return ID# all over the box. Now 30 days later when I call to find out why I haven't received my package, they say they haven't received it and I won't be getting my $330.88 back. The lady on the phone told me I was screwed if I didn't have a delivery confirmation on my package. So basically company's can steal your returned items if you don't put a delivery confirmation code on it, so then they don't have to pay you back. I would have kept the food if I knew this was going to happen!!!

Medifast...The Best Ever

I started to develop a weight problem after my mom passed away in 2008. I was 145 pounds for 20 years. I got married and my weight ballooned up to 190 for five years straight. I tried all other diets like Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers and Nutrisystem. Then a friend told me about Medifast. Since Mid-January, I have lost 19 pounds. Thank you Medifast for helping me get back to where I want to be, a thinner self-confident person. With all the food you ship out and the limited complaints you have on this website. You must be doing alot right! Thanks Medifast, you ROCK!!!!
